ESTHERVILLE, Iowa -- A poor start doomed the Minnesota West Community and Technical College women's basketball team to a 69-52 loss against Iowa Lakes Wednesday night. The Lakers outscored the Lady Jays 27-12 in the first quarter.

Things went better for West after that, but not good enough.

"We didn't start well in the first quarter, but we did a great job and came back," said West head coach Rosalie Hayenga-Hostikka. "With about two minutes to go in the third quarter, we were down 48-46 and probably had about four possessions to tie it or go ahead, and couldn't score. And we actually went about nine minutes without scoring."

Lexie Ramsey and Emily Schroer led Minnesota West with 10 points apiece. Teammates Emily Shaffer and M'Kayla Mike each scored nine.

Breanna Wendland and Samantha Hagedorn scored 20 and 15 points, respectively, for Iowa Lakes.

The Lady Jays, who struggled in the rebounding department against the taller Lakers, are now 1-3 on the season.

"We did some things well to get back in the game, but just couldn't execute down the stretch," said Hayenga-Hostikka.

The women will be in action again on Saturday, at home beginning at 1 p.m., against Southwestern Community College.
